Logan’s List: Media Meal #2

Written by Logan Welliver. Media by Paul Anderson.

Welcome to the second edition of an article where I attempt to convince you to take a small amount of time out of your week to take in some sort of art or music that may help you gain some perspective and improve your life. You may HATE everything I list here and that’s okay too. Let’s start off with my favorite thing for this week.

Album: “King Of The Beach” by Wavves

Cover to “King of The Beach” by Wavves

For those who lock their doors and freak out to music on a regular basis, Wavves is the perfect band for you. And for those who don’t? Wavves is the perfect band for you. A garage punk/surf rock band from San Diego, CA, Wavves makes music that keeps fists pumping and arms flailing. I once heard Wavves described as, “perfectly out of tune,” (See Michael Lawrence) and that is exactly true for this album. Whether it be the no-care attitude of “Post-acid” (Please understand, I’m just having fun) and “Idiot” (I’m not supposed to be a kid, but I’m an idiot) or… wait, that’s pretty much every song on this album. A mix of anarchy and anti-motivation, “King of the Beach” is a solid album for those days when you just don’t care.

Length of Consumption: 37 Minutes.

Song: “Streamside” by The Album Leaf

Have you ever encountered a song that literally made you want to be “in love” in that moment? Welcome to Streamside. A lyric-less, acoustic ballad that imposes an image of a flowery field of daises being tossed by the wind next to a crystal clear, ever-flowing stream. Peace, tranquility, cuddling, and a long nap are the feelings and activities that come to mind (put this into perspective with the album title, “In A Safe Place”). Tis’ the perfect “before bed” song and something that absolutely must be experienced.

Length of Consumption: 3 Minutes, 34 seconds.

Movie: “Bernie” (2011) directed by Richard Linklater

A few years before the critical phenomenon “Boyhood” was released, Richard Linklater directed this fantastic Black Comedy starring the perpetually funny Jack Black. In one of his premier roles, Black plays an assistant funeral director named Bernie Tiede from the town of Carthage Texas where he finds himself after killing an elderly lady, Marjorie Nugent. Whether it’s the darkhumor, the superb writing, or a combination of the both, Bernie stands high above many black comedies of today. Did I mention that it’s based on a true story? And for those critical skeptics, check out its Rotten Tomatoes.

Length of Consumption: 99 Minutes

Book: “Freakonomics” by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

A book for this generation. In a world filled with media that superimposes the “truth” upon us and society telling us what to believe, Freakonomics is a refreshing view. It offers a change of perspective on several issues that one may not consider all too often. Like do the KKK and Real Estate Agents have more in common than you may expect? Sumo wrestlers and teachers? Or, what is the true explanation for the decline of crime in the 1990s? Find out what authors Levitt and Dubner have to say in Freakonomics.

Length of Consumption: Depends on the person, I’m almost done…
