Kicking off the basketball season last Wednesday night, the Greenville College basketball teams and many students came to the gym to participate in Midnight Madness! Every year in October, the men’s and women’s basketball teams at GC come together to get the students amped for their season. With doors opening at 10 pm, students rushed to the gym to get a seat on the bleachers before the “madness” began at 10:30 pm. When the time came, the lights went off and the teams were introduced from oldest to youngest members.

Both teams were excited to have the fans there cheering them on. Alli Haug, a freshman player, stated, “I honestly wasn’t expecting the amount of people that came to watch.” Senior Missy Deal added, “Fans, thank you for coming out for such a fun night! You are so important to us! When fans are at games, it often provides the extra energy players need on the court, so continue to come to the guys’ and girls’ games this season! We love our fans!”

The Greenville College Student Association, GCSA, put on the event and had many activities for the students throughout the night. Jantzen Michael, a freshman player, said, “I really appreciate all the planning done by GCSA.” There were contests for best school spirit, three minute-to-win-it games such as pulling all the tissues out of a tissue box as fast as possible, and knockout. GC’s cheerleaders and dance team also put on an incredible routine at the event. Junior player, Michael Holm, shared, “I thought Midnight Madness went really well, and it was fun to see all the fans and student body get involved in the games and activities. My favorite part was probably just seeing all the fans come out and support both the men’s and women’s teams, it is really cool to see the support from other students.”

The majority of the players’ and fans’ favorite part of the night was the dunk contest. Sophomore player, Ethan Leskovisek, explained, “The dunk contest was the best part of the night because the guys who participated can jump out of the gym! It was cool to see the different tricks they could come up with and then seeing the crowd respond to the dunks. The best one was definitely when Alex went between the legs on his final dunk, everyone in HJ went nuts and it was so fun to experience that.” Alex Daniels, transfer junior, won the contest. There were ten guys that entered the dunk contest and one girl, Coley Baker made her appearance this year in the contest.“A mini hoop was brought out for Coley,” Senior Kayla Hyde stated, “Coley’s dunk was something that she and I have been wanting to do since we were freshmen. She has mad hops! It was great to be a part of that.”

The players are really excited for their season. Andrew Scott, senior, shared, “I’m excited to see how we integrate all of the talent we have into the system being put in. I am confident that we will have a memorable season topped off by a conference championship, conference tournament championship, and a chance for the Division 3 NCAA tournament. The crowd was awesome and did a great job of supporting our teams. I hope they’re ready to watch some good basketball!”

Lindsay Burton added, “This makes me so excited for the season. Last season was great; we made it to the conference tournament, our goal. But that means we’ve set the bar even higher this year, and I know we can reach that goal. We returned almost everyone and we gained some crucial players. Not to mention, we are more than a team, we are a family. We worked hard over the summer, we worked hard pre-season, and we are going to go far! Just like the support we had last night, we need that same support during the season. That support will carry us. Let’s go!”
