As the snow begins to melt and temperatures turn warmer, that can only mean one thing- baseball season is just around the corner. The Greenville College Baseball Team could not be more excited about the upcoming season. Last season Greenville baseball made a run and won the SLIAC tournament championship to earn a NCAA Division III tournament berth.

The GC baseball team had a pretty good season last year finishing just over .500%, with a record of  22- 21. Not only did they finish over .500, they were able to pull through the conference tournament on top.

Looking forward to this season the team is in high hopes for another NCAA tournament run. In the SLIAC pre-season ranking’s Greenville is ranked in the number two spot in their division.  This puts them in a high pre-season spot with hopes and expectations of making the conference tournament. The top two teams in each division qualify for the conference tournament.

The team has been practicing for a few weeks now, trying to get on the field as much as the weather will allow them too. Head Coach Lynn Carlson said, “We have been working out with early morning lifting and running, with defensive practice following. Then in the afternoon we have been hitting and pitching.” Veteran leader Mike Hardin also commented saying, “We have a very young team that is slowly coming together as one. Returners and seniors are leading the way to create the same work ethic leading to another title repeat.” This team is being led by six seniors and one returning all conference player,Trevor Montgomery, pushing this team to be better than ever before.

As this baseball season approaches Mike says that he is most looking forward to seeing all the hard work they have done in the off season pay off, and to see where the dedication of this team can take them this season. When asked how their mentality is different after their postseason run last year, he replied, “Seeing the hard work pay off last season has pushed us even harder this off season, and the feeling of winning has motivated them to continue in that same direction.”

The team throws their first pitch of the season on Friday Feb. 19 in Birmingham, Alabama. Friday March 4, Greenville will have their first home game at 1:00 P.M. Come out and support the Panthers as they start another great season!
