Everyone’s first thought at the beginning of the year is to hit the gym. Before a workout, think about your goals. Are you looking for muscle building, strength workouts or endurance workouts? Phil Wilsman, GC student athlete, said the biggest mistake in working out is not knowing what you are doing.

Now, this doesn’t mean you must spend hundreds of dollars on a personal trainer, simply ask for help. Search Youtube to find a workout video, or ask a friend for help, just swallow your pride and do it right. Both Coach Barber and Wilsman agreed you should work out 5 days a week for approximately 30 minutes. Whether you go for a run or hit the bike trails, get active.

Many diets claim to be the best, but you can form a diet just right for you. Make sure you get three meals a day. Moms are right when they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps kick start your metabolism. When you want a snack, stay away from sweets. When you reach for a cookie, choose an apple instead. For a quick treat, mix and freeze fruit. Frozen grapes are a great on the go snack. Healthy snacks are a good metabolism boost.

If possible, stay away from fried food, fast food and sugary drinks. A sweet drink from Jo’s Java is a great pick me up each morning, but try ordering a black coffee instead of one filled with sugary syrups. In reality, drink more water! Your body needs water, so make sure you are drinking plenty.

Sleep is an important overlooked aspect of a healthy life. Wilsman stressed the importance of getting 8 hours of sleep every night, and Coach Barber suggests getting up at the same time each day. If you need to take a nap, make sure it is no longer than 20 minutes, otherwise it will change your sleep patterns. Make sure your body gets to rest!

Wilsman remarked, “In today’s world, fitness is photo shopped. It is made to seem like you have to be perfect, which causes people to feel insecure like their body is not enough. You can’t get caught up in perfecting your body. Your identity is not in that.”

Wilsman, when asked if there were any other aspects of a healthy life, mentioned a personal walk with God. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own” 1 Corinthians 6:19(NIV). We tend to forget the most important part of a healthy life is our faith. Our body is a temple and a gift from God. He commands us to take care of it.

Whether you are building muscle, or just keeping your body healthy, remember to eat healthily and get plenty of sleep. A healthy life is not only physical but spiritual. Your body is a gift, take care of it.
