The Greenville College Softball team entered Clermont, Fla. with a record of 2-8-1. They played doubleheaders all week against some formidable competition. Regardless of the scoreboard, the Lady Panthers performed well under the circumstances they faced.

The first of the Panthers’ two wins on the week came against Oberlin College 13-2 on Monday. The win wasn’t in sight from the beginning with the Panthers falling behind 2-0 by the second inning. They didn’t allow that early lead to stop them from coming back as they cut the lead in half by scoring one run in the third.

The team rallied in the fourth inning by scoring five runs. A two-run single by Anaya Tobiason, a two-run single from Laney Thacker and an RBI single by Bryn Mckie completed the offensive outburst. They kept the momentum going by scoring two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. GC extended that lead with four runs in the seventh, as Thacker singled to bring in Tobiason, followed by a double from Danielle Helms.

Brianna Anderson controlled the defense with her strong performance on the mound. She tallied six strikeouts to hold off Oberlin’s offense. Anderson also allowed only one earned run on five hits and one walk the entire game.

The second win came on the same day against Wisconsin-Platteville with a final score of 6-1. Catie Opp had a phenomenal day on the mound against Wisconsin-Platteville throwing a no-hitter, with four strikeouts and no walks in her first career varsity start.

Tobiason had a great game batting as she went 2-for-2. She singled in the second inning and had a double in the third. The Panthers had another offensive outburst in the second inning, scoring five runs on a double, an error and a single by Opp.

Platteville scored off on an error in the sixth to keep it from being a shutout.

The Lady Panthers played great games throughout the rest of the week. Their last day was cancelled after tying Lawrence University 1-1 due to persistent thunderstorms. The Panthers improve to 5-11-1 heading into their first conference matchup versus Principia on Thursday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Come show your support as they begin conference play this week!
