The Greenville College Softball team put up a great performance in their home opener against Millikin University this past Friday. The Panthers split the series with Millikin winning the first game 2-1, before being shutout in game two, losing 4-0.  This brought GC’s record to 2-4.

In the first game the Panthers got out to an early lead by getting a run across in the bottom of the second. The score was a product of senior Andrea Martin hitting a double to left field. Later in the inning senior Laney Thacker singled to center field scoring Martin from third. In the bottom of the sixth, junior Cassandra Lueking doubled to center field to set up the second score of the night. Junior Tiffany Samsoe scored the second run for the Panthers on a sacrifice bunt from Martin.

While the Panthers’ offense is the strength of the team with plenty of scoring assets, junior Brianna Anderson stole the show by pitching a gem to secure the win. Anderson pitched seven innings with four hits allowed, along with only one earned run. She tallied eight strikeouts and one walk on the night.

Millikin contested the Panthers in the top of the seventh inning with a run scored off of a single by Haley Rotert. The Panthers finished the first game strong defensively to hold the Big Blue at bay.

In the second bout between the two the Panthers weren’t fortunate enough to come out on top. GC failed to get its offense going, leaving six batters on base. Freshman Cayla Speaks replaced Anderson on the pitching mound for the second game. Speaks stayed poised throughout the game and showed her determination, but unfortunately fell short of picking up the win.

The Panthers played well for their 2016 home opener with plenty in attendance. They will get their next crack at it this Thursday at home against Monmouth College with games starting at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Come show your support for your Lady Panthers!
