5 Graduation Movies

Written by Erin Lobner. Media by Courtney Murphy.

For the hard-working Greenville College seniors, graduation takes place in less than two weeks. Until then, students will be finishing up projects and completing final exams. But it’s also important to take a little time off to relax in between all the busy days. A great way to do that is to get together with friends and watch a movie or two. So, here are five movie suggestions graduating students might find relatable, or just entertaining.

 1. “Grease”

Let’s start off with a classic. Many of us probably saw the 1978 musical recreated on the stages of our high schools. While the characters in this movie aren’t in college, some of their adventures can be relatable. As graduation approaches, they struggle to develop relationships and choose a path for their future. This is a great choice if your friends enjoy jamming to catchy tunes or somewhat cheesy rom-coms.

  1. “This is Our Time”

Out of all the movies on this list, “This is Our Time” is probably the most similar to Greenville College. It’s a Christian movie that follows a group of friends after their graduation from college. It shows some very real challenges to adjusting to independent life; single friends feeling left out as their friends get married, or feeling lost as the people around them follow their passions while they’re stuck working at a restaurant. The movie’s trailer shows how emotional unpredicted circumstances can be, and how difficult it can be to rely on God through it all.

  1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Another high school story, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” comedically covers the events that transpire when Ferris attempts to skip another day of school before graduation. His principal is convinced that Ferris is cutting classes, and he sets out to prove it. But Ferris, of course, was prepared for whatever the principal could throw at him. This is definitely a great movie to watch for another night full of laughs before commencement.

  1. Graduation

This movie takes a bit of a different twist on graduation as four friends decide to pull off a heist to steal the $100,000 one boy’s mother needs for cancer treatment. One of the friends decides that the group should rob her father’s bank on their graduation day. As far as bank heist movies go, the reviews suggest that this one is pretty good. Be sure to watch it if you want more action than anything.

  1. Legally Blonde

This might seem like a strange choice, but “Legally Blonde” combines some encouraging themes with lots of comedy. The movie is about Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), who was just looking forward to marrying her boyfriend. Unfortunately, he breaks things off because she is “too blonde.” To win him back, she decides to attend Harvard, and throughout her time there she learns some important lessons. This is certainly an entertaining film, and it shows the merits of persevering despite the odds.
So, gather up your graduating friends and spend some more quality time together. Whether you plan a movie night or go on an outing, be sure to let those closest to you know how much you appreciate them!
