One of the biggest anticipations of 2018 is “A Wrinkle in Time.” Written by Madeleine L’Engle, this sci-fi fantasy is the first book in the “Time Quintet” series. The book has been the recipient of the Newbery Medal and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. The book tells the story of Meg Murry. Both of her parents are scientists, but her father has gone missing. He was working on a way to travel through a fifth dimension by a process called “wrinkling time.” Meg’s little brother Charlie decides that it is up to them to save their missing father. Accompanied by Calvin, the three meet up with mystical beings Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which before going on their adventure.

Although this is the book’s first time on the big screen, it is not the first movie. In 2003, Disney created a made-for-television version of the movie.  This 2018 version, however, brings star power and is history in the making. This new film, helmed by Ava DuVernay (known for “Selma” and “Queen Sugar”) stars Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Storm Reid as Meg Murry. With a budget of $100 million, DuVernay has become the first woman of color to have such a massive budget. The movie is in theaters March 9.

You may know Greg Berlanti’s “Love, Simon” by a different name. “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” is a 2015 young adult novel written by Becky Albertalli. The book follows the titular character Simon as he navigates his high school life as a closeted gay teen. But when someone discovers his secret, he’s blackmailed. Albertalli earned the William C. Morris Award, and this book was featured in the Wall Street Journal.

This coming-of-age story will star Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, and Josh Duhamel. Mary Krauss, a senior here at Greenville, wants to see this movie, saying, “I love seeing the world becoming more accepting and open, spreading love and not hate. I want to see more of that.” “Love, Simon” comes out March 16.

Ready Player One” was Ernest Cline’s debut novel, which earned him the Prometheus Award. The 2011 novel is set in a dystopia. The story follows Wade Watts as he escapes to a popular virtual world called the OASIS. The plot is kicked into overdrive when it’s revealed that the creator of the OASIS has died and has hidden an easter egg in the game. Whoever finds it will inherit a treasure.

Steven Spielberg will direct the theatrical story of Watts attempting to find the easter egg and inherit the OASIS. The film features many pop culture references that are sure to excite fans. Some of those references include “The Iron Giant,” the DeLorean from the “Back to the Future” film series, the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and the Ford Falcon from the “Mad Max” films. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Lena Waithe, and Letitia Wright. You can catch this epic adventure on March 29.
