The Comedy Drama: “My Spy” Movie Review

Movie Scenes
Assembled by Jason Dossett.

My Spy is a comedy-drama that mixes the lives of a CIA operative and a nine-year-old girl. The film begins by showing us a tough, manly, and strong guy named JJ (played by Dave Bautista) who blows his cover while fighting against Russian criminals. This sets the scene for the rest of the movie as he gets demoted to go stakeout and keep eyes on this little girl and her mother. As JJ and his partner Bobbi (Kristen Schaal) continue their stakeout by planting cameras around the apartment, the intelligent nine-year-old happens to stumble upon one of the cameras and begins to investigate it. Sophie (Chloe Coleman), the little girl, tracks down the CIA agents and forces them to help each other or else she will shut them down. Throughout their time together, Sophie and JJ start to develop a friendship. JJ fills in the role of a father figure to Sophie until the criminal uncle gets involved and tries to take back the plans that the father had hid for a miniaturized nuclear bomb. The uncle and his crew bring trouble to the family and almost get away with the blueprints, but fortunately enough, Sophie, Sophie’s mother, JJ, and Bobbi were able to bring them down.

Talking with Mark and Karen Dossett, they said that they thought the movie had its really good moments and believed it to be funny at times, but it wasn’t one of their top 10 movies either. Mr. Dossett said, “My opinion of this movie is that it was a fun distraction, but not a movie that I will remember very long at all. The storyline was very typical of many spy movies. It was hardly realistic at all, but still fun to watch for an evening.” I think Mr. Dossett presents a very good point that it’s a good movie to just watch for a night when looking for something to do. On the other hand, Mrs. Dossett said, “I like the action, but the suspense leads to a feel-good movie when you know that the little girl will be saved in the happy ending. I enjoyed it and felt like there was a lot of fun personality in the characters between the characters.” Mrs. Dossett points out that she enjoyed the fun characters and the happy ending, which can help leave you with a happy feeling knowing that everybody is okay.

Overall, this comedy-drama was a fun movie to watch for a night due to the fact that JJ, who was portrayed as this big tough guy, had to tap into his sensitive side to connect with Sophie. While it was enjoyable for the time being, this film wasn’t the most memorable movie of the year. Bautista’s dad jokes and Coleman’s smart-aleck humor made it interesting to watch, but there were some flaws in the development of the movie and a story that could have been improved ever so slightly to capture the viewer’s attention better. When looking at the movie’s plot, it could have been done better by developing the relationship of the criminal uncle and the father, giving us some backstory on the criminal’s objective. On a scale from 1-10, I would rate it around a 5 because while it did humor me as I watched it for the most part, it’s most likely not a movie I would need to see a second time. For anyone interested in this movie, I would recommend watching it as long as you are a mature teen or with adult supervision due to some violence and profanity.

  1. Great write up! I enjoyed the movie but agree there was nothing iconic or extraordinary that would draw me back in the future. Except maybe Blueberry. Classic soft spot for a strong, brawny male lead character.

  2. The plot of the film is very simple, but I cannot say that this is a big minus. On the contrary, in some cases, I want to turn my head and just laugh with my loved ones at a completely unobtrusive comedy.

When you watch ‘My Spy’, then be ready to definitely notice something so similar and familiar in it. Everything in this film is simple: this one is like a dozen family comedies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dwayne Johnson and Hulk Hogan.

I didn’t see anything really surprising in this movie, but I’ll say that I liked it. Anyone interested in watching: Dave Bautista is big man trying to find a path to the heart of a child who so needs an adult understanding friend. All jokes in the movie are as tolerant as possible and verified to the smallest detail. Family cinema should delight everyone!

I liked this pleasant and full of adventure movie!
