With a twinge of southern soul, Diable’s voice is distinct and pure–something that listeners only get to hear every so often. Many can try to say that she reminds them of a certain artist that has a unique drawl such as Lana Del Rey, but Diable goes far and beyond in a music industry that continues to settle for less-than-great acts with mediocre voices.
Create Your Own Mythology opens up with “I’ll Make Time For You,” a definite tune that vibrates between country, smooth jazz, classic rock, and rockabilly. With backing vocals to build upon Diable’s already powerful force, guitars and keyboard solidify the song that can be long heard within us even after it’s over.
“Time Will Wait,” with Diable’s powerful and emotional vocals, is by far the most authoritative and potent song in her debut album. Like a ticking time bomb, a guitar smoothly opens up as Diable’s lyrics follow along, but after the first chorus the song turns energetic and never looks back at its former soft self. And from that point on, neither does Diable’s songwriting.
The album itself is like an autobiography of Diable’s life, or her most inner thoughts and emotions at best. In seemingly addressing love, devotion, and stability, Diable doesn’t restrain herself and comes clean with an emotional force that cannot be ignored. “True Devotion” displays Diable’s current (and even future) ability to write songs as she portrays an honest and sincere lyrical capability that reaches far into the hearts and thoughts of many. In addressing confliction within the song, she refuses to be kept at bay by any problematic situations, stating that true devotion is learning how to love one as they come. The piano becomes her best companion as it guides her throughout the entire song, leaving the utmost spotlight to Diable’s beautiful and soothing voice, which isn’t forced or withdrawn.
Considering Create Your Own Mythology isDiable’s only nationally released album, it can be expected that this is only the beginning for an up-and-coming talent who’s yet to reach her full potential. Stringing together arrangements that tap into Diable’s preference for classic rock, such as Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Fleetwood Mac, there is no room for criticism for Create Your Own Mythology, as each song holds its own weight against the dynamic-ness of America’s music business, which strives for one-hit wonders and lack of lyrical capability. If they are trying to look for that in Kristin Diable, though, they won’t be finding it anytime soon.
