The air is crisp as colorful crunchy leaves fall from trees leaving many with the desire to stomp on them. Autumn is officially here and it’s the perfect time to come together as a community and enjoy the various activities this season offers. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Greenville College Alumni Association hosted its 4th Annual Eckert’s Farm Bonfire – an event for any young alumni to reconnect.
Eckert’s Millstadt Farm is located in Belleville, Ill. and those attending had to reserve tickets through Events Coordinator Heather Fairbanks by Sept. 29. The tickets included free admission to the farm and a bonfire meal. If someone forgot to RSVP, they could still attend the event but had to pay $12 at the entrance. Alums were able to bring their spouses and children to this event which led to a lot of fun for many. Alum Rachel Jervis enthused, “Eckert’s was great! I loved seeing everyone and getting to shop in their quaint country store. They have all sorts of animals in their petting zoo which is awesome– I can officially say I’ve pet a kangaroo now! And their freshly made kettle corn and cider is amazing.” [clear]
The event began at 5 p.m. and reserved tickets were picked up at the entrance from a GC representative. During this time, there were several activities to partake in like picking your own apples, walking through a corn maze, watching pig races and feeding animals at the petting zoo. Around 6:45 p.m. the alumni gathered at the bonfire site for prayer and then the bonfire commenced at 7 p.m. The turnout was great and there were several bonfire stations for people to divide and cook their own hot dogs and smores. It was a good time to work together as a community while visiting with friends.[clear] Tyler Kohrs, GC representative and GC student commented, “This is the fourth year that the Greenville College Almost Alumni and Young Alumni Association held this event at Eckert’s in Millstadt, Ill. This was the biggest number of people we have had since starting the event and for those who are seniors and alumni of Greenville College. We love having everyone from Greenville College reuniting and it is a great way for our current seniors to interact and make connections with Greenville College’s alumni.”[clear]
After the bonfire, many left to get in line for the haunted hayrides. Senior Madison Moran stated, “The haunted hayride was awesome – some parts were pretty terrifying. I would definitely do it again.” While the weather provided for amazing scenery, many relaxed and enjoyed the Annual Eckert’s Farm Bonfire.
