There are some things that college students want their families to know. It gets frustrating hearing question after question about college because their families just do not understand everything about what college is really like. Here are seven things that we wish our families knew.
We don’t actually sleep in till noon.
Unlike our families believe, we do not sleep in until noon every day. We have 8:30 classes and for Chapel we are up by 9:30 on at least 36 days! Sometimes, we even get up earlier just to get stuff done.
We nap all the time.
If you call and we don’t answer, we are most likely taking a nap. Even when we are not tired, we can still fall asleep. We may not be getting our full eight hours of sleep at night, but we make up for it in naps!
We do not know what we want to do.
The questions about our majors, careers or future make us want to vomit, scream and mentally shut down all at once. The truth is, we aren’t 100% sure of anything. We need some time and some space to think things through. We are going to change our minds multiple times, but we need you (our families) to listen and support us, no matter what we are thinking at the time. We are uncertain of our path, so you will just have to wait and see!
We can not explain why we are up till 2 AM.
We are pretty sure, that the hours from 10 pm to 2 am are actually shorter than the others. Sometimes we are up cramming for tests, cranking out papers or rolling on the floor laughing. There comes a point when we look at the clock and wonder how it can be so late. We do not mean to stay up so late, but it just happens.
We do not know where our money went.
An emergency coffee, a toothpaste run, a birthday gift and who knows what else. No matter how hard we try to save our money, it all disappears. Who knew it took so much to keep one human being alive. We really can’t explain where all our money goes, all we know is that it is gone.
We do not remember the last time we cleaned.
We cannot recall the last time we changed our sheets, cleaned our bathroom or let alone washed our hair. Our lives are too busy. Do not worry if it really starts to smell, we will clean it, but for now, we are okay.
We actually do miss you.
Some people have become like our family, but they will never replace you. We are having fun, but we think of you all the time. We miss you a lot and count down the days till we see you. We love to hear from you, even if we seem annoyed. We know you miss us, and we miss you too.
