The Greenville College Baseball team took on Spalding University this past weekend and came away with the series win. The Panthers won the first two games and lost the third. It was a battle between two of the top three teams in the East Division of the SLIAC Standings, with Spalding in the lead and GC at number three.  The top two teams in each division advance to the conference tournament next month.

Game 1

The Panthers jumped on the Eagles early, scoring one run in the first inning on a single from Travis Ralls. Ryan Strohm kept Spalding’s offense quiet for seven innings, and Jason Collingwood, who recently earned SLIAC Pitcher of the Week honors, took over on the mound with the game tied at one. Greenville finally scored in the ninth inning on another RBI by Ralls and a blooper by Shane Olmsted to make the score 3-1. Collingwood slammed the door on Spalding in the ninth and the Panthers held on.

GC once again took the early lead with an RBI from Ralls in the first inning. Soon after, Olmsted hit a dinger to left for a two-run homer, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Spalding scored two in the third inning, making the score 3-2, but the Panthers didn’t give up. Adam Lamb shut down the Golden Eagles up until the seventh inning when Collingwood took the mound once again in relief to finish the game. Jesse Getz scored in the seventh to make the final score of the game. Greenville won 4-2.

Keeping the repetition of scoring early, the Panthers scored on a single by Ralls. The Eagles answered back and tied the game up, 1-1, but that didn’t last long. Danny Strohm singled up the middle and scored Max Gabriel, which put the Greenville up 2-1. Spalding hit a home run to tie the game but CJ Opp came in to pitch and kept the score close at 3-2 Eagles. Dillion Reel entered the game to pitch for the Panthers and held Spalding at three runs. Ralls then drove in Nate Miller to tie the game back. The Eagles managed to score two more in the eighth and Greenville fell to the Eagles 5-3 to end the weekend.
