The Greenville College Women’s Softball team split their first conference doubleheader on Saturday at home against Webster. The Panthers played two very exciting games that came down to the final inning.

In the first game, the Lady Panthers lost 12-11 after starting off with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bryn Mckie gave the Panther’s offense some life with a single. She displayed her base running skills by stealing third later in the inning.

The Panthers held the lead shortly, until Webster scored a run in the top of the second. Then Webster found a rhythm in their hitting after scoring seven runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, to extend the lead to 10-1.

The Panthers did not let the substantial lead break their fortitude as they put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the fifth by bringing in seven runs to cut their deficit to two, at 10-8. Webster scored two runs in the top of the seventh to give them a four run lead.

Greenville did their best to counter as they answered with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a Laney Thacker two-run homerun. Unfortunately the Panther’s lost with runner left on base in scoring position to potentially tie the game.

The second game was a different story for the Panthers as they won 8-7. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Webster scored a run to lead the game. Greenville scored four runs in the fifth off of an RBI double by Danielle Helms, an RBI double by Tobi Tobiason, an RBI double by Tiffany Samsoe and an RBI single by Thacker.

The game came down to the seventh inning with the Panthers down by two. Thacker would be heard from again in a loud way. It did not take long for her to find her pitch, with no balls and one strike she made full contact sending the ball straight over left center. That was Thacker’s first walk-off in her softball career and a great way to start off conference competition.

The Lady Panthers (1-1 SLIAC; 6-12-1) play their next conference doubleheader at home against Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday, April 9th at 12p.m. and 2p.m. Head on over to support your Greenville College Panthers!
