The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is the NCAA Division 3 conference in the Midwest. All Greenville University athletics, except football, play in the SLIAC. The GU Women’s volleyball program is currently taking the conference by storm with their dominant play. The Panthers are holding on to the second spot with a 10- 2 conference record and an overall record of 14-9. Webster University is leading in first with a conference record of 10-2. These two programs faced off Wednesday night and each team battled hard to take control of the conference but unfortunately for us, Greenville came up short.
One individual who has continued to prove herself this season is Sophomore Abby Freeman. The underclassmen just recorded her fourth SLIAC weekly honor! Teammate and captain Anna Finch was also able to pull in her second honor this past week while claiming the SLIAC Volleyball Offensive player of the week. Both individuals have been amazing so far this season and their ability to lead on the floor is absolutely inspiring.
Although the two individuals above have been OUTSTANDING and a big highlight, it’s also important to recognize other individuals on the team that have been performing just as well on the volleyball floor. With that being said, the current SLIAC Volleyball Leaders from Greenville University will be recognized below.
Abby Freeman is currently leading the SLIAC conference with 355 kills, and 4.49 kills per set. Teammate Anna Finch also has her name in the top 5 for the total number of kills with 186. In terms of hitting percentage, these current record holders need to have played in 50% of team games and have at least 3 total attacks per set. Finch holds the second spot for this category with .281. Abby is trailing in the fourth place slot for hitting percentage with .243.
Emily Stahl, a 5’10 freshman from Alton, Illinois is currently making a name for herself. Stahl has crawled her way to join Abby to hold a spot in the top 10 for hitting percentage with .225. The assists category is currently being led by sophomore Abby Quirin with 731! The next person even close to reaching Quirin has a total of 485, which is a 246 difference.
Junior Allyson Grabowski holds the sixth spot in digs per set with a current average of 4.97. She is also in fifth place for the total number of digs with 393. The block solo category has Anna leading with a total of 18 and Freeman in third with 16. The block assist category currently has Anna Finch in third with 43 and Emily Stahl right behind with 42.
Aside from individual stats, the Greenville University Volleyball program as a whole is doing exceptionally well. The Panthers are ranked #1 in the SLIAC standings in the hitting percentage category with .187. This group is also leading the conference in assists with 882. MacMurray College follows with a total of 756. GU, in fact, holds another first place slot in the total number of kills with 941. Greenville is, however, in second behind MacMurray with a total number of blocks with 132. Service aces are being led by the Panthers as well with 167.
As you can see, the volleyball program here on campus breeds pure athletes and success. Every individual gets it done on and off the floor which contributes highly to their accomplishments as a team. They understand nothing is given to them and they have a huge target on their back. The Women’s volleyball program gladly accepts any challenge and they are always ready to run the SLIAC!
