Finding Your Purpose

Let’s talk about purpose. An often overused and misunderstood word people throw around to feel good about themselves. We all want a purpose in this life. Without it, why are we here? Purposes can be broad or specific. It can be said about a group of people or about each individual. Let’s talk about the purpose of the body of believers as well as each person that chooses to love Jesus.

What is the purpose of Christianity? Maybe that seems like a dumb question, but even if you feel confident in your answer to that question, we all encounter doubts. There are difficult patches on this journey of life and we need reminders along the way.  Mark 12:30-31 says, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” So why does Christianity exist? Because a being greater than us loves us so much that He sent down His one and only Son to die on the cross and open the gates of heaven for those who follow Him. Because of this, we live to love Him and love others. Now that’s a purpose worth living.

Many get caught up in “finding purpose” because we are not sure what we want to do with our lives. Think about how many times you have heard someone talk about changing their major. Humans cannot make up their minds! We think we were born for some great reason and our goal in life is to figure out what that might be. While we all have a purpose, this theory is not the truth.

Where do you find purpose? Do you find it in your career? Or what about your relationship with others? Maybe you find it in unhealthy things such as drinking, drugs, or sexual impurities. Your purpose should not be found in any of these. It should be rooted in God. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” There is a sweet ticket to eternal life we are all seeking. God is where we need to start. If one does not know that their purpose comes from God, do not be surprised when they get confused with life. According to Romans 8:28, our purpose comes from God. That’s where you need to begin if you feel without purpose.

If we know that our purpose comes from God, why do we ever question it? Romans chapter 12, specifically verse 2, voices the truth that purpose does not come from the world, but rather the Lord. It reads, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” The world has a lot of good stuff to offer. But it also has a lot of junk that can get in the way of people seeking Jesus. This verse speaks truth to the fact that our purpose comes from God and that purpose is more than enough, it is perfect! Do not become discouraged because you feel purposeless. Instead, seek the truth from God that all that dedicated their lives to Him have an immense purpose.
