As of September 23rd, the Greenville University Baseball team began its 2019 fall campaign. The team started practice and will have a four-week period to be together as a team with their coaches able to work with the players. The head coach, Lynn Carlson, is entering his 24th season at the helm and is looking forward to seeing what his Panthers have in store for upcoming Spring season. The Greenville Panthers also have a lot of new faces this year. There are thirteen new freshman on the team all looking to make an impact on this year’s team.
When asking junior shortstop, Ryan Taylor, about how he feels the fall season has gone so far he said, “I feel like that we have really come together more as a team this year than in years past. There is just something different about this group this year than my last two years. We have been more accepting of each other and that has allowed us to progress as a unit quicker than before. I feel like our team’s work ethic as a whole is far better and we just have this undying will to get better and win this year.”
When asking freshman pitcher, Brady Maltbie, how he feels about his experiences on the team so far, he replied, “The team is a lot of fun. All the guys are really nice and have welcomed me and all the other freshmen and that is just amazing to me. So far the coaches have been really cool and helpful. I really feel they know what they are talking about. It has been a blast through the first week.” Maltbie also had a lot to say about the upcoming season. “I am really excited. I have been wanting to play college baseball for so long and now I finally have gotten that opportunity. It will be an amazing experience.”
There are over forty guys on the roster, all looking to make an impact on the team and the fall is really a time where guys show up and look to do that. With tons of talent and only a limited amount of spaces on the field, each player is really trying to show why they deserve the time over everyone else at their position. There is a lot of competition at almost every position, so it is looking to be one of the most productive fall seasons from a developmental standpoint in recent history.
The Panthers will continue to practice on Monday and Wednesday, play scrimmages every Friday, and play a double-header on Saturdays until their last game is played on Friday, October 18th at 7 pm against the Greenville Baseball alumni. This is also the weekend of the Greenville University Homecoming, so make sure not to miss that exciting weekend full of activities including the Greenville University Panther Football Homecoming game that Saturday.
