Comedy has long been an old boy’s club. Men have dominated improv teams, sitcom casts, and stand up comedy for years. The origins of the belief that women are not funny is difficult to trace, but can still be seen in parts of popular culture today. Out of the eighteen comedians currently on the cast of Saturday Night Live only seven are female. Late night television has no female hosts. Primetime network comedies are overwhelming centered on a male lead character.

Three Women Found After Decade Missing

In one of the craziest stories of 2013 so far, three women who had been missing for a decade and were presumed dead were found in an Ohio home. They had been held captive and raped by 52-year-old Ariel Castro, who has now been charged not only with the kidnappings but also murder, as he reportedly forced a miscarriage for at least one of the women after impregnating her.
