Women’s Soccer Defeats Principia

Written by Portland Highbaugh.

Oct. 31, 2012 was more than just a typical Halloween night.  On this night, the Greenville Lady Panthers soccer team defeated the Principia College Panthers in the semifinal game for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Never before in school history has our ladies soccer team been able to overcome the Principia Panthers.

Women’s soccer coach Jeff Wardlaw could not be more proud of his team. “All year long, we’ve been saying there’s something special about these girls and we keep waiting for something to click and thankfully, it happened on a good night,” Wardlaw commented.  Coach Wardlaw is not the only one who is pleased with how the girls performed that epic Wednesday night. “I’m so happy and proud of our team.  We stuck together and worked hard and our efforts paid off,” junior defensive mid Claire Conwell-Vargas stated.

Junior wing mid Jen Williams is also elated with how her team performed. “That couldn’t have happened at a better time. We had a rough season in the beginning.  We had great chemistry off the field, but for some reason we weren’t clicking on the field. Then, all of a sudden, it was like everything made sense and we beat them when it mattered.  We’re a great group of girls and this is our year,” she said.

The lady Panthers will face the Webster University Gorlocks tonight at 7 p.m.  The game will determine who will represent SLIAC in the NCAA tournament this year and will take place at Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri.  Come out and support your women’s soccer team as they attempt to make history again!

“Webster is going to be a hard game, but don’t count us out.  We are very determined and have a lot of heart,” Conwell-Vargas proclaimed.
